Striper Spring Wrap Up for 2017

Post date: Jul 23, 2017 11:38:37 PM

We are still getting a great number of stripers up to 22 inches while smallmouth fishing.

The spring was an odd spring. Very cold to start with a few warm days sprinkled in. April proved to be tricky to be consistent but big fish were caught every week. We put some serious damage on stripers up to 40 lbs but these a days you are waiting for one big bite in the lower river. Fishing up the river where the shad were proved amazing days. I love doing split trips for stripers and shad. Split days keep it very exciting, 30, 40, 50, 60 shad on this amazing year then dropping back some baits for bass and getting some great bites up to 37 lbs. This year was a very epic year for shad, normally we have some incredible days that can produce 100 shad in a day but this year was big schools and big fish.

As the water warmed up the shad fishing got even better and the stripers were hungry. Then we had a major rain event that shut us down for 3 weeks and during those three weeks, we slide back into a cold front which shut down any fishing.

As May arrived the water cleared and the sun warmed the water up. Striper plugging the lower river and deep jigging the deep holes work very well. the fish stayed deep from Florence to Bensalem. The reason they stayed back was that's where the herring where. This is where paying some one that knows the entire river pays off.

the second week of may off arrived and the fishing was beyond anything I have ever witnessed. It started with a few days of some modest fishing 4 bass, 7, bass, 12, bass, then 36 bass, then 51 bass, then 55 bass, and then the day that I couldn't believe 72 stripers in a 6-hour trip and we walked away from fish. As the another week passed the fish started to decline just like they inclined. The best part of this year was the fish class was 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33-inch range is the majority with bigger fish mixed in up to 40 lbs at a rate of almost 1 out 7 fish.

As the month waned the fish naturally got smaller but we moved up the river to middle/lower bucks and had some great days catching 12, 18, 25 or so fish a day in the 22-28 inch class.

This type of fishing especially fishing for numbers or quality is highly dependent on your skill set. Can you cast, can you work a lure, or set the hook on a running fishing, can you pump and reel, do you have a fishing IQ, Do you know where to cast.

Yes, I can teach this but if you have the skills down you will do much better. There are few days I am not hooking fish for people at a rate of 5-1. There are days people don't want me to fish, they want to hook their own. I'll let an hour go by then I'll cast a few times hook up as a thermometer of whats going on.

I know I live on the water and can run the majority of the river blind but I have also had some bad ass guys on the but that put in work and terrorize the stripers!
